The MonetDB team at CWI is pleased to announce the new "Feb2008" release of the MonetDB suite of programs. This release marks the roll forward of the binary storage layout to a single column storage layout. This involved a major overhaul of the MonetDB Server code. IMPORTANT NOTE: The database format of this release is not compatible with that of any previous release. Before installing this release, make a dump of your database, and do a restore afterwards. Further changes include: SQL: The functional extensions to SQL are limited. The mostly concern minor bugs and some of the optimizers have been improved to better exploit re-occurring joins. The core cracker code has been cleaned up for better inspection and sharing in the community. XQuery: Next to the original Pathfinder compiler (nick-named "milprint_summer" or simply "MPS"), the development of the new improved and enhanced Algebra-based Pathfinder compiler ("ALG") is progressing quickly. While the original MPS version remains the default in this release of MonetDB/XQuery, a preview of the new ALG version is now available without recompilation. JDBC & XRPC: The Java code (JDBC driver & XRPC wrapper) has been moved from the clients and pathfinder source trees to a dedicated java source tree in CVS, which can simply be compiled using "ant". The MonetDB team at CWI is pleased to announce a new release of the MonetDB suite of programs. The main user-visible change in this release is the renaming of the MapiClient tool to mclient. The new mclient tool not only has a new name, it also has more capabilities than the old MapiClient tool. Apart from this, many bugs have been fixed, and many speed improvements have been made. The MonetDB team at CWI, The Netherlands, is happy to announce the availability of a new bug-fix release for the major "Venus" release. New versions of all components of the MonetDB suite are released. MonetDB/XQuery The handling of updates was incomplete. Several memory mapping and concurrency problems have been fixed. Moreover, empty pages that resulted from deletion of nodes are now properly handed back to the system for reuse. MonetDB/XRPC Security and concurrency handling has been improved. MonetDB/SQL Foreign key constraint checking fixed; View in view dependencies bug fixed; Resolved crashes caused by large views; Prepared statements with more than 30 arguments now work. MonetDB/API Haskell and TCL libraries were broken and have been removed; Perl and Python libraries were broken and have been fixed. It is my great pleasure to announce the availability of MonetDB 4.12.0 and its accompanying SQL 2.12.0 and XQuery 0.12.0. This release is the next step in delivering the high performance database system that has been under development for several years now. Some of the many changes since the 4.10.2 release include: MonetDB/XQuery 0.12.0 (nick-named "Ceres") Various improvments of functionality and performance. Addition of XPath extensions for XML standoff annotations. "Ceres" is a small detour on our trip to "Mars" [1], as update functionality is unfortunately still not robust enough for consumption by the majority. MonetDB/SQL 2.12.0 Many bugfixes. Support for local and global temporary tables. Preliminary support for triggers. Dear all, Today we make available a bug-fix release of our open source high-performance database system family: MonetDB 4.10.2 MonetDB/SQL 2.10.2 MonetDB/XQuery 0.10.2 nick-named "Earth". In this bug-fix release, crucial bug have been fixed that were detected since the release of MonetDB 4.10.0, MonetDB/SQL 2.10.0, & MonetDB/XQuery 0.10.0 on January 25, 2006. Some of the more noticeable bugs being: - memory leaking in Mserver after prolonged use. - some XQuery queries giving internal MonetDB errors ('maybe you mean...') - hanging MonetDB server when shredding/querying multi-GB documents. [Monetdb-announce] Release of "MonetDB/XQuery 0.10", "MonetDB/SQL 2.10" & "MonetDB 4.10" (aka. "Earth")

Dear all, we're pround to annonce the new release of our open source high-performance database system family: MonetDB 4.10 MonetDB/SQL 2.10 MonetDB/XQuery 0.10 or simply nick-named "Earth". The new release is avialable for download from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=56967 . The MonetDB release 4.10 ("Earth") marks the end of a period where much attention was given to improving the performance of simple SQL applications. These improvements came from careful analysis of student programs and participating in the "c't" Magazine's database contest featuring the DVDstore benchmark. It led to re-consideration of MAPI -- the communication protocol -- aiming for less overhead and complex structures to be parsed. To facilitate this, JDBC has been largely rewritten at core level to streamline the communication flow even more. Not only JDBC has benefited from the changes made, all MAPI driven communication has been sped up. A second Perl library has been prepared, which more directly uses the MAPI library. It has been registered at the official Perl archive for distribution (CPAN). ODBC has been upgraded to support server side prepared statements like JDBC. More meta-data is now available for columns in JDBC. MonetDB/SQL has been extended with SQL:03's sequences support. This allows for identity columns, serials (PostgreSQL) or auto_increments (MySQL) in MonetDB. A complete rewrite of the catalog and transaction handling removed the overhead encountered in small interactions. The SQL transaction scheme is based on three BATs (stable,inserts,deletes) which are merged at the end of a transaction. MonetDB/XQuery performance has been significantly improved thanks to the introduction of an element index and other optimizations both in the compiler and the server. Further, support for a number of new built-in functions (e.g. subsequence, replace, match) has been added and MonetDB/XQuery now provides (limited) support for XQuery modules. The latter allows defining 'prepared queries' by using functions defined in modules, which results in better response times especially for small queries. The tools to prepare the source compilation (Mx), source code generators (MEL, Burg) and makefile generators (autogen) are assembled in the buildtools package. They are not needed to recompile the distributed source code. In the kernel area we have added the 'constant' module. It provides functions to work with BATs whose tail consist of a constant value. During this period we have solved numerous bugs reported by our users. In addition we organized 3 bug testing days to encapsulate the problems reported into scripts that became part of our nightly testing scheme. Several smaller performance improvements have been made to the inner core of the server. One semantic error has been the cause of confusion. BATs with signature [void,void] are now allowed. A detailed description of the changes will follow soon. Lack of manpower, expiring access to external machines, ceasing system maintenance and decrepit hardware forced us to stop nightly testing on IBM AIX, SGI IRIX and Sun Solaris. Thus, all active support for these (aging) platforms had to be suspended, too, but can easily be revived on request, once we (re-)gain access to such systems. Higher on our wishlist are more modern systems, especially 64-bit Windows and 64-bit Mac OS X. We welcome any donation in this area: access to respective systems, hardware, and/or (especially in case of the pending 64-bit Windows port of MonetDB) development-expertise and -time. The next release of MonetDB version 4 is scheduled for March 2006. By that time we also plan to release the alpha version of the next generation of MonetDB, version 5.
