[Monetdb-developers] Deployment of MonetDB
Dear users, In our ongoing effort to improve the MonetDB software suite we would like to hear from you. It appears that MonetDB is used for teaching, and customers use it for/within their products. Also, the divergence in primary platform is crucial for us to keep focus. We would greately appreciate if you could replay with a short message how you deploy the software and your top priorities for a next release. Thank you for you cooperation, Martin Kersten
Hi, Could you provide RPMS for SuSE? That's the flavor of linux used in most business environments.... Dariusz. Martin Kersten wrote:

Hi Dariusz, we currently don't have (access to) any (virtual) SuSE machine and hence cannot provide SuSE RPMs right now. Given our limited resources ((access to) hardware and man-power), I don't expect this to change shortly. Any kind of support / contribution would be welcome. Apart from that, it should be possible to build SuSE RPMs from the source RPMs that we do provide. Regards, Stefan On Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 08:46:55PM -0400, dariuszs wrote:

Hi, I've had a problem with sources on SuSE and that's why I asked for RPMS - I compiled to different verisons of ther server, Feb2009-SP2 and May2009, the compilation went fine but the server was crashing while loading data or running queries, when I installed the same versions on Ubuntu or Fedora everything is working. The reason we'd like to stick with SuSE is because it has the best drivers for hardware and RAID I/O is crucial. Dariusz. Stefan Manegold wrote:

Hi, One more thing - that's not a problem, we can run Ubuntu or Fedora, it's just much slower, that's all. Thanks. Dariusz. dariuszs wrote:

Hi, do your Ubuntu & Fedora machine(s) have the same hardware as your SuSE machine? On Ubuntu and Fedora, are you using our installers/RPMs or did you compile yourself? If the latter, how? How did you compile MonetDB on SuSE? In case MonetDB crashes due to a yet unexplored problem only on SuSE, but not on Ubuntu & Fedora under similar conditions (same hardware, same workload, same compiler (-version), etc.), it might be a SuSE related problem and just using SuSE RPMs (which are obviously only compiled on a SuSE system) might not help --- of course it the prerequisit to find out ... How did/does MonetDB crash (reproducibly?) on SuSE? Any error messages? Assuming smae hardware and configure- / compiler- options, how big is the performance difference (only?) due to better hardware (RAID) drivers on SuSE? Hi, I've compiled MonetDB on SuSE and Redhat from sources, compilation was fine, but the server was crashing. Because I just wanted to have the software working I've installed it on Ubuntu and Fedora using installers, and so far I don't see any crashes. Performance - big difference - when running queries, dumping tables to disk, and that's all related to drivers and optimization on SuSE which I have to implement on Ubuntu now. Dariusz.
