Installing libreadline-dev (which for some reason was missing), deleting everything in the build directory, and then bootstrap, config, make, make-installing again (using clone of the mercurial repository) worked.

% mclient --version
mclient, the MonetDB interactive terminal (Oct2012-3a365170cd97)
support for command-line editing compiled-in
character encoding: UTF-8

If your output doesn't show the "support for command-line editing
compiled-in" line, it means you didn't have readline available when
installing.
