I get this error quite often and in most cases, setting the environment
variable LC_LANG and LC_ALL has solved this problem. Please try this, but
I'm not sure about the exact case of you.

Indeed, for that you have to re-compile with --enable-debug

Regarding the space there is a lot of free space..
This is what I get: gdb --args /usr/bin/mserver5 --dbpath=/opt/monetdb/CUSTOMERnew/sb_traf --set merovingian_uri=mapi:monetdb://CUSTOMER-monetbd:54321/sb_traf --set mapi_open=false --set mapi_port=0 --set mapi_usock=/opt/monetdb/CUSTOMERnew/sb_traf/.mapi.sock --set monet_vault_key=/opt/monetdb/CUSTOMERnew/sb_traf/.vaultkey --set gdk_nr_threads=8 --set max_clients=64 --set sql_optimizer=default_pipe --set monet_daemon=yes --dbinit="sql.start();" GNU gdb (GDB) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6.1-80.el7 Copyright (C) 2013 Free Software Foundation, Inc. This at least could give you a stack trace where the segfault occurs, which helps in determining the cause.
Furthermore, you might check your free diskspace and the size of the sql_logs directory in the dbfarm/<database>
