gotcha, thanks. is it a heavy lift to provide users with an on/off
toggle? i could submit a feature request to bugzilla, but won't if it's
unlikely to happen.. (i don't have a good sense of how hard that would be

its not the implementation but the avalanche of messages you will get. there are debugging options available on the command line, which controls this.
