The relevant contents of the merovingian.log file might help and also the version of MonetDB and the OS distribution, but if you're trying this with the Nov2019 release on Linux, the reason might be a packaging error. Check whether there are files with "fits" in the name under the lib/monetdb5 directory (name of this directory varies with OS). It so, remove those files.
