To answer your questions, there are multiple ways of running a clustered MonetDB setup. There is some support for clustered operations in monetdbd, see the section on "MULTIPLEX-FUNNELS" [1]. Apart from that, some virtual duct tape is required to set things up, but this nothing to be afraid of and the load balancing scenario is certainly possible.
