[MonetDB-users] Discontinuation of MonetDB XQuery
Hello I am a MonetDB XQuery supporter ( http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.db.monetdb.user/3824) and I am sad that it is discontinued. I was very enthusiastic about the software so I was rather excepting an upgrade to MonetDB5. However I am confident that it will be easy to turn my application to MonetDB5. As a basic XQuery user, my questions are threefold: 1)Are there some explanations for this change (flaws in the design of XQuery 2.0, lack of users, performance limitation)? 2)Is MonetDB5 SQL able to store GB of data (as MonetDB XQuery)? Will we observe performance gains for (time ordered) one dimensional data? 3)Is there an equivalent to the XRPC API? Warm regards Ryad
Dear Ryad, first of all, thank you very much for using, supporting and advocating MonetDB/XQuery! Given our own research agenda --- both here at CWI as well as our partners in the Pathfinder project (U Tübingen & U Twente) --- (after all, our main "business" is doing database research, and MonetDB as open source product is "merely" our "hobby"), as well as our limited resources, we had to make the decision to discontinue active development of MonetDB4/XQuery. We did internally consider and discus the option of porting MonetDB/XQuery to the MonetDB5 backend, but could not free sufficient resource for this step, or align it with our research agendas. Of course, MonetDB is open source, and we invite the open source community to consider taking care of this port. If required, we are available for support as far as our resources and agendas allow. While the active development has been ceased, the latest "Mar2011" release of MonetDB4/XQuery is and will remain available "as-is" for download and use form the MonetDB web site. Please find answers to your questions inlined below. On Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 09:44:10AM +0200, Ryad Ben-El-Kezadri wrote:

(At least for the time being,) There is not XQuery front-end for MonetDB5. We are considering to extend MonetDB5/SQL with SQL/XML support, but do not have a detailed agenda for this, yet. As said, given limited resources, our MonetDB development is
2)Is MonetDB5 SQL able to store GB of data (as MonetDB XQuery)? Will we observe performance gains for (time ordered) one dimensional data?
Yes, MonetDB5/SQL is capable of storing GB or even TB of data. One of our largest installations is a ~2TB SkyServer installation; cf. http://www.scilens.org The limit is bascially the address space (32-bit or 64-bit) and the available disk space (whatever comes first). Performance is better the more main memory (RAM) is available.
3)Is there an equivalent to the XRPC API?
No. Focussing on SQL, MonetDB5/SQL "only" provides standard SQL APIs like JDBC & ODBC --- and our own MAPI. Kind regards, Stefan
Warm regards Ryad
